Association Internationale des Professeurs de Philosophie

With great concern and profound sadness, the Board of the AIPPh has perceived the attacks on the State of Israel. Our sympathy and solidarity goes to all citizens and their families who have become victims of the inhumane acts of violence. Our hope is that in this terrible escalation, the extent of which is not yet foreseeable, as few civilians as possible will lose their lives and that elementary principles of humanity will not be further disregarded.

Current issues

In todays’ nation states we have inhabitants from many cultures with various traditions of thought and logic. But normally we tend to believe that our standards of reason are universal, and that our arguments are understood everywhere in the same way. Can we rely on rules of senseful communication between cultures? Global problems require global solutions, not only as a political agenda, but also in philosophy, for instance in environmental ethics. All too often, however, ‘Western’ thinkers remain stuck in their own traditions of thought, taking their own epistemic standards to be normal, partly due to a lack of knowledge of others’. However, the ideal of wisdom, which is linked to an overview perspective, prohibits narrowing down or focusing on sub-areas. We therefore believe that we need to learn to look at issues, methods and concepts from different angles in order to better understand the problems at hand.

This conference is therefore about a critical expansion of a narrow Eurocentric concept of reason (according to Adorno, since Enlightenment reason must ultimately question itself) – whithout however ending in trivial relativism. The intra-European critique of classical bivalent logic must be questioned, as well as the concepts of rationality in Asia (tetralemma) and South America (paraconsistent logic), as well as African traditions of thought that differ from so-called ‘Western’ thought. What can debates in Islam about rationality contribute to a culture of critical reason in our time? Lyotard speaks of ‘reasons’ in the plural, because in fact there exist different cultures of thought, even within the European tradition.

In this conference, therefore, we want to ask what the basic structures and possibilities of such a multifaceted reason are, with which we can communicate internationally without making 'Western' concepts of reason binding. Is for instance the concept of a transversal reason viable? And, above all, how can a common understanding be reached at all?
